5-Step Fertilization and Herbicide Program

Our 5-step program is designed to promote healthy, lush lawns while controlling weeds throughout the growing season.

  1. Early Spring (March-April)

    • Goal: Jumpstart growth and prevent crabgrass.

    • Application: A pre-emergent herbicide combined with a balanced fertilizer to strengthen roots and prevent early-season weeds like crabgrass from germinating.

  2. Late Spring (May-June)

    • Goal: Enhance growth and control broadleaf weeds.

    • Application: Fertilizer with a focus on nitrogen for vibrant green growth, paired with a broadleaf weed control herbicide to tackle dandelions and clover.

  3. Summer (June-July)

    • Goal: Maintain health and prevent stress.

    • Application: A slow-release fertilizer to sustain growth and strengthen the turf, often combined with spot treatment for stubborn weeds.

  4. Early Fall (August-September)

    • Goal: Boost recovery and prepare for cooler weather.

    • Application: A fertilizer high in nitrogen to repair summer damage and encourage healthy growth, often paired with a weed control treatment.

  5. Late Fall (October-November)

    • Goal: Strengthen roots and prepare for winter dormancy.

    • Application: A winterizer fertilizer with potassium to promote root health and resilience during the winter months.

Fertilization Program

A well-designed fertilization program for Wisconsin lawns focuses on promoting healthy, lush grass while addressing the state’s unique climate, soil conditions, and growing seasons.

  1. Early Spring (March–April)

    • Objective: Wake up the lawn after winter dormancy.

    • Application: A balanced fertilizer with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to jumpstart growth and strengthen roots.

  2. Late Spring (May–June)

    • Objective: Promote dense growth and tackle emerging weeds.

    • Application: Fertilizer with a higher nitrogen content to boost lush, green growth. This is often combined with a pre-emergent herbicide for crabgrass and a weed control product for broadleaf weeds.

  3. Summer (July–August)

    • Objective: Protect the lawn during heat and drought stress.

    • Application: A slow-release or organic fertilizer to provide steady nutrients without overfeeding. Focus on maintaining the lawn’s health rather than promoting rapid growth.

  4. Early Fall (September–October)

    • Objective: Repair summer damage and encourage thick growth.

    • Application: Fertilizer with high nitrogen to replenish nutrients and prepare for cooler weather. This is an ideal time for overseeding if the lawn has thin or patchy areas.

  5. Late Fall (October–November)

    • Objective: Strengthen roots for winter dormancy.

    • Application: A "winterizer" fertilizer high in potassium to improve root health and enhance the lawn’s resilience during Wisconsin’s cold winters.

Herbicide Applications to Parking & Gravel Lots

Maintaining weed-free gravel parking lots requires multiple herbicide applications to address both existing weeds and prevent future growth.

  1. Initial Application (Spring – Early Growing Season)

    • Objective: Eliminate existing weeds and prevent seed germination.

    • Application: A combination of a post-emergent herbicide to kill actively growing weeds and a pre-emergent herbicide to suppress future weed growth. Common products target broadleaf weeds, grasses, and stubborn perennials like dandelions and crabgrass.

  2. Mid-Season Maintenance (Summer)

    • Objective: Control any new weed growth and manage tough or persistent weeds.

    • Application: Apply a selective or non-selective post-emergent herbicide, depending on the level of weed infestation. Spot treatments may be used for areas where weeds are particularly dense.

  3. Late Season Application (Fall)

    • Objective: Target perennial weeds and prevent winter germination.

    • Application: Apply a systemic post-emergent herbicide to eliminate deep-rooted perennials like thistle and bindweed, ensuring they don’t survive the winter.

  4. Optional Soil Sterilant (As Needed)

    • Objective: Long-term prevention of weed growth in problem areas.

    • Application: A soil sterilant or residual herbicide may be applied in areas where vegetation growth needs to be completely eliminated for an extended period (e.g., gravel areas with no desired plant life).

This multi-step approach ensures gravel parking lots remain clear, functional, and visually appealing throughout the year.
